Scyther is a Brilliant Diamond exclusive in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl that can evolve into Scizor through trade-holding.

Scyther is a Bug and Flying-Type Mantis Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl that evolves into Scizor once certain conditions are met. While Scyther is not as strong as its superior evolved form, it does have decent strength at Base IV, with Attack 110 as its highest stat and Special Attack 55 for its lowest. However, once Trainers evolve Scyther, it becomes one of the best competitive Bug-Type Pokémon in Diamond & Pearl.

Firstly, it is necessary to mention that Scyther is a Brilliant Diamond exclusive. The primary location to catch Scyther is within the Grand Underground, a cluster of subterranean zones that becomes accessible once players obtain the Explorer Kit. To get the Explorer Kit, speak to an NPC known as the Underground Man in Eterna City. Once players have the kit, they can travel to the Grand Underground and encounter Scyther within Still-Water Cavern, Riverbank Cave, Grassland Cave, and Big Bluff Cavern. The Mantis Pokémon can also spawn in Sunlit Cavern but will only appear after the player has acquired the National Dex Upgrade from Professor Oak. Moreover, Scyther has a 20-100% chance of encountering Trainers on Route 229 via the Walking method.

After capturing Scyther in the overworld or the Grand Underground in Pokémon BDSP, fans can evolve the Bug-type Pokémon into Scizor by trade-holding it with a Metal Coat. There are several ways of obtaining a Metal Coat in Diamond & Pearl. The first and easiest method is by talking to Byron in the house on Iron Island. However, he will only present a Metal Coat once Trainers have acquired the National Pokédex through beating the game’s main story.

Alternatively, Trainers have a slight chance of finding a Metal Coat when catching one of the following Wild Pokémon:

  • Magnemite
  • Magneton
  • Steelix
  • Skarmory
  • Beldum
  • Metang
  • Metagross
  • Bronzor
  • Bronzong
  • Magnezone

Keep in mind that this approach is not very reliable since these Pokémon have a 5% rate of holding a Metal Coat when being caught. Therefore, it is recommended for players to obtain the Metal Coat naturally during a playthrough or from Byron during the post-game content.

Once players acquire the rare item in Pokémon BDSP, they can give it to a Steel-type Pokémon to increase its Move power by 10%, or they can evolve Scyther into Scizor through trade-holding. Trade-holding is performed by giving Scyther the Metal Coat before exchanging Pokémon with another player. As mentioned above, Shining Pearl users will need to trade for Scyther or Scizor as they do not have the Mantis Pokémon on their version.
