Warning! Spoilers for Love Everlasting #1 on Substack below.

Tom King and Elsa Charretier are teaming up for a brand new romance comic, Love Everlasting, an ongoing series that will be completely free on Substack. On Monday, King revealed his newest project would be hosted on a joint Substack page with Charretier, where readers can sign up to read the new romance comic. Love Everlasting, which will “explore the limits of storytelling through the lens of romance and heartbreak,” will have a new 24-page issue out each month.

Tom King is one of the industry’s most prolific writers, as he’s penned some incredible stories, including an award-winning run on Mister Miracle (with Mitch Gerads), Batman, and most recently, the Human Target with Greg Smallwood. Meanwhile, Elsa Charretier is a rising artist in the comic book industry. She has worked on IDW’s Star Wars Adventures, drawn The Unstoppable Wasp for Marvel, and tackled the sixth issue of The Department of Truth for Image Comics. In addition, Charretier also runs an excellent YouTube channel where she talks about the creative process of comics, does case studies on iconic comics, and talks with fellow creatives about the space.

On Monday, Tom King revealed Love Everlasting, a new Substack romance comic with art by Elsa Charretier, colors by Matt Hollingworth, and letters by Clayton Cowles. King describes his first creator-owned comic as a “work of insane ambition” that the creative team has “poured our hearts and souls into.” Love Everlasting is a story about “hope, death. and rebirth” set in the world of frightengingly fantastical romance comics of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.

The comic is set to use the tropes from the romance genre to explore the heart of humanity, as the Substack press release says the comic is an “examination of the perversity of this obsession, of the damage done, the hearts broken, the lives lost in pursuit of the beautifully impossible: of love everlasting.” Love Everlasting #1 is already available to read for free on King and Charretier’s Substack page. For readers who want extra incentives, you can sign up for different paid tiers, which include smaller perks like process posts, to much bigger things rewards such as an artist edition of the series’ first issue.

It’s pretty awesome to see King and Charretier offer the comic to readers for free, while providing extra perks for those who want to sign up for paid tiers. The romance genre is ripe for further exploration and it seems Love Everlasting will provide a fresh new take on its tropes and storytelling. Love Everlasting #1 by Tom King, Elsa Charretier, Matt Hollingsworth, and Clayton Cowles is available to read on Substack now.
