Boba Fett Solves The Mandalorian Season 3’s Biggest Question

The Book of Boba Fett’s Mandalorian-centric fifth episode proves that Din Djarin can stand on his own in a third season – without Grogu by his side.

Warning: SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 5.

While The Mandalorian season 3 is still a ways off, The Book of Boba Fett episode 5 has just answered a major question about the show. The fifth episode of Boba Fett was a surprise, as it didn’t feature the titular character at all. While the arrival of Fennec Shand at the episode’s finish implies that Din Djarin will reunite with Fett before the end of the season, this episode was all about the Mandalorian himself.

When audiences last saw Din Djarin at the end of The Mandalorian season 2, he had defeated Moff Gideon and sent Grogu off to learn the ways of the Force with none other than Luke Skywalker. Questions abounded, the most blaring of which was the question of if Grogu would return in The Mandalorian season 3. While this episode of Boba Fett did not supply a definitive ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to that question, it successfully answered something even bigger.

Perhaps the biggest question going into The Mandalorian season 3 was that of whether the show would work without Grogu in it – and Boba Fett just proved that it absolutely could. The Book of Boba Fett’s fifth episode was jam-packed with conflict and character development that should be more than enough to carry Din Djarin through a season’s worth of struggle. The episode sees Din Djarin ejected from his clan, sets up a future reunion with Bo-Katan Kryze, and may have planted seeds for Djarin to become the ruler of Mandalore.

Though Din Djarin is sure to face personal struggles in The Mandalorian season 3 after losing his only close relationships, the show’s next season is also likely to dive much deeper into Mandalorian lore and culture. The Mandalorian’s Book of Boba Fett episode devoted considerable screen time to the Darksaber, both showing Djarin learning how to wield the weapon and explaining its significance. This suggests that a third season of The Mandalorian will be devoted to exploring the people of Mandalore, for which Grogu is not a necessary component.

In fact, as lovable as the future Jedi Grogu is, the character may have already served his purpose in the story. Grogu’s main purpose for being in The Mandalorian could have simply been to set Din Djarin on a path away from being the ruthless bounty hunter he at first appeared to be. Through Grogu, Djarin’s compassion grew, setting the character on a journey that may pay off in a huge way while he faces his people in the next season of The Mandalorian.

Of course, the young Padawan was mentioned several times in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, with Din Djarin even leaving Tatooine at the end of the episode to give Grogu a gift and pay him a visit. While this proves that Grogu is indeed still important to Djarin, any future appearance of The Mandalorian in The Book of Boba Fett would suggest that this reunion happened off-screen. Whether or not The Book of Boba Fett gives any more hints at what The Mandalorian season 3 may be about, it’s clear Din Djarin will have a lot on his plate even if he’s on his own.
